Funko Pop Collecting 101: A Beginner's Guide

New to Funko Pops? Here's everything you need to know about starting your collection the right way.

Funko Pops are the gateway drug of the collectible world. Those big-headed vinyl figures with the dead eyes have taken over every fandom imaginable — and for good reason. They're affordable, widely available, and there's literally one for everything.

Understanding Pop Numbers

Every Funko Pop has a number on the box. This is its catalog number within its specific line. Lower numbers in older lines tend to be more valuable because they were produced in smaller quantities before Funko became a household name.

Chase Variants

Chase variants are the golden tickets of Funko collecting. These are alternate versions of standard Pops — different paint, different pose, glow-in-the-dark — produced in a 1:6 ratio. That means for every 6 standard Pops shipped, only 1 Chase is included. They're marked with a "Chase" sticker and can be worth 5-20x the standard version.

Exclusives

Store exclusives (Target, Walmart, Hot Topic, etc.) and convention exclusives (SDCC, NYCC, ECCC) are where the real value lives. Convention exclusives in particular have extremely limited production runs and can appreciate significantly.

Condition Is Everything

In-box collectors dominate the Funko market. A Pop in mint condition with a perfect box is worth dramatically more than a loose one. Invest in Pop protectors — they cost $1-2 each and can preserve hundreds of dollars in value.
